Collection Snakes: Fear, Fascination, and Public Perception

Throughout publishing history, snakes have been used to attract attention, sometimes through fascination and scientific curiosity, and other times through fear and sensationalism. Magazine covers provide particularly interesting examples of how these animals have been presented to the public.

Some publications emphasize the danger associated with snakes, while others use dramatic photography to encourage readers to learn more about them. Entertainment publications have also used snakes to promote horror films, often portraying them as aggressive animals intent on attacking people.

These portrayals can reinforce misconceptions about snake behavior and make public education more challenging. Although some snakes are dangerous and should be treated with appropriate caution, most would prefer to avoid confrontation with humans rather than engage them.

An interesting example appears on the August 2006 cover of Fangoria, promoting the film Snakes on a Plane. The cover uses a corn snake, a nonvenomous species generally known for its relatively docile temperament, as part of a frightening image.

The contrast between the animal’s typical behavior and its portrayal illustrates how presentation can influence perception.

Snakes can certainly inspire fear, but they are also fascinating animals with important ecological roles. Preserving these magazine covers provides an opportunity to examine how public attitudes toward snakes have been shaped by entertainment, journalism, and scientific communication over time.
