Preservation Significance

These issues have preservation value because they document a specialized Japanese reptile and amphibian publication that combines captive husbandry, breeding reports, taxonomy, natural history, field observations, conservation topics, and the Japanese herpetocultural community.  For an English language preservation project, the physical copies also preserve material that is less accessible to researchers and hobbyists who do not read Japanese or routinely search Japanese catalogs and publisher archives.

The two issues further demonstrate why retaining the original physical publication matters bibliographically.  The prominent “vol. 7” and “vol. 10” on the covers refer to the Breeding Report Special series, while the magazines themselves are both bibliographic Volume 16.  Preserving the issues together with accurate metadata prevents that distinction from being lost or miscataloged.  No. 90 is also listed by the publisher as sold out, making the physical copy useful evidence of an issue that is no longer available as a normal publisher back issue.  Together, Nos. 90 and 93 preserve a snapshot of Japanese reptile and amphibian publishing, husbandry practice, field reporting, and taxonomic interests in 2021 and 2022.
