Preservation Significance
Canadian Reptile Hobbyist has preservation significance because it documents an effort to create a distinctly Canadian reptile and amphibian publication focused on captive care, breeding, natural history, conservation, and the Canadian herpetocultural community. This September 2016 copy is Volume 1, Issue 1, the premiere issue of the publication. Contemporary records show that the magazine was launched through MeisterWorks Graphic Design by Neil Meister and that a second issue was being prepared in 2017, but the publication has left a relatively limited public record. Preserving the first physical issue therefore retains direct evidence of the magazine’s launch, its original design and editorial focus, and an early attempt to give Canadian breeders, businesses, conservationists, researchers, and reptile keepers a publication centered on their own community.
